The Catholic Performance Doc
Receiving the sacraments of initiation in 2022 as an adult has been, and always will be, the greatest gift of my life. [Shout-out to my Wife, Brandi, for gently inviting me to Mass and helping me find the faith home that I was seeking]
Why was I seeking? Hmm, well, how much time do you have? lol I’ll keep it brief…as we get to know each other, you’ll discover all the answers to that question.
I always had faith in something bigger, but I was not quite sure what that was. Later, through actual grace, I’d come to realize God created me with a disposition or interest in human movement and sports science that would lead me directly to him.
2 moments in particular :
THE FIRST MOMENT:
I learned directly that God created someone, not something. I’ll never forget that moment of revelation.
I was in grad school working on my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Our first course was an intense gross anatomy lab, where we were tasked with dissecting a beautifully donated human cadaver to find every muscle, ligament, tendon, nerve, etc.
While the book showed a “human diagram”, the real-life lab showed something very different. Every human body had some unique variation that the others didn’t, and that was not in the textbook.
The revelation:
“We are created by something that is all-knowing and loves us so much; he took the time to individually craft us and prepare us for a mission ahead.” Through sanctifying grace, I’d learn that God, who is love, created us in his image, and the proof was put right in front of me in that anatomy lab.
THE SECOND MOMENT:
Truth Doesn’t Contradict Truth. Really, it was an accumulation of moments while working in elite sports performance environments.
As I was advancing in my career in the sports performance field, I was diving into the science. Wanting to find the truth, whether it was different methodologies, supplements, gadgets that were hypothesized to improve performance. The research kept showing the same truth: “no better than placebo.”
The revelation:
A placebo is more than “just a sham.” Taking it a step further, a placebo works because of an individual’s thought that is backed by faith in an outcome.
When this thought backed by faith is practiced enough times is becomes a belief and then can become a belief system. That belief system can create physiological changes to our being even when the variable used is a sham.
This got me asking the question: what is true and what is real?
If I could find that, what would happen to overall human performance if we were able to anchor our belief system in that?
Right about that time is when my now-wife, Brandi, invited me to Mass, where I would find the truth I had been seeking.
So here we are now, as an adult baptized into the Catholic Church, I’m on fire to celebrate with others and do my part to help build the church up.
By entering into the Divine Beatitude (via a good amount of prayerful wrestling, where, to no surprise, he is victorious), I’ve learned the best way for me to serve is by welcoming you to “Catholic Training Camp™”
